News April 23, 2021

Sheffield Wednesday face Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium this weekend, as they go head to head in the Championship.

Tom Pearce, Wednesday Picks predictor (@tompearce97)

This will be the 115th meeting between the two sides, with the first coming in 1895 in the FA Cup, in which Wednesday came out 2-0 winners.

The Owls have a good recent record against Boro, winning three of their last four meetings.

That includes the reverse fixture from earlier this season, in which Wednesday came out 2-1 winners last December.

How will tomorrow’s game play out, though?

Sheffield Wednesday Form

Darren Moore’s side kept their slim chance of survival alive as they beat Blackburn at home 1-0 on Tuesday.

If results go their way this weekend then a win could take them just one point from Derby who are in 21st spot.

That was Wednesday’s first win from four attempts and they have picked up seven points from six games. That means they find themselves in 15th place in the form table.

Middlesbrough Form

Neil Warnock’s side came from behind to beat 10 man Rotherham 2-1 away from home on Wednesday night.

That was their first win from six and they had picked up just four points from those games. They now currently sit in 22nd spot in the form table.

They’ve failed to win in their last couple of games at the Riverside, losing to QPR in the last game at home.

Our Picks For Wednesday Picks – Middlesbrough V Sheffield Wednesday

In Focus

1. Will Sheffield Wednesday beat Middlesbrough? Yes

With the fact that Boro are out of the playoff race and are out of form, whilst Wednesday have everything to fight for, things look good for an away win.

Whilst it might not be a 4-1 like the last time The Owls visited the Riverside, they have a good chance to get three points.

2. Will Sheffield Wednesday score in the first half? Yes

Josh Windass scored the only goal on Tuesday in the 37th minute, meaning Wednesday had now scored a goal in the opening 45 in four of their last five games.

It’s no surprise either, as Wednesday have scored more than double the amount of goals in the first half than they have in the second when playing away.

It won’t be easy, though, as Boro have kept a clean sheet in the first period in 57% of their home games this season.

3. Will Sheffield Wednesday score in the second half? No

The Owls have failed to score in the closing 45 minutes in any of their last four games and it’s likely for that run to continue.

In fact, they have failed to score in the second half in 81% of their away games this campaign.

Meanwhile, Boro have conceded just nine goals from 21. That’s an average of 0.43 goals against per second period at home.

4. How many goals will Sheffield Wednesday score? 2

It was just the one goal for Wednesday at the weekend, however, if they’re going to win they’ll likely need more than one.

The thing is, they  have scored exactly two goals in just 19% of their away games this season.

However, when it comes to the back end of the season and with teams fighting for survival, anything can happen.

Warnocks have conceded just 21 goals from 21 matches at the Riverside, though, averaging a goal against per home game.

5. How many goals will Sheffield Wednesday concede? 1

Wednesday’s defensive record is considerably worse when they play on the road compared to at home.

With just two clean sheets and 38 goals conceded form 21 matches, they are currently averaging 1.81 goals against per away game.

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Boro score just the one goal, either. In fact, they have done that in 38% of their home games this campaign.

6. Will Josh Windass score? No

As previously mentioned, Windass scored the only goal of the game on Tuesday night.

That was his ninth goal of the season, with eight of them coming in the league. He’s in decent from as well, with that being his second goal from four games.

He doesn’t have the best record against Boro, though, failing to score in any of his four appearances against them.

Quickfire

  • Will Kadeem Harris assist a goal? No
  • How many shots on target will Barry Bannan have? 0
  • How many tackles will Joel Pelupessy make? 2
  • How many saves will Kieren Westwood make? 4+
